NEAPOLIS-X

This project aims to promote the Neapolis Nabeul archaeological site, as well as the knowledge, know-how, and practices linked to the production of garum, a condiment in the form of a sauce, made from fish fermented in salt under the effect of the sun.

The site dates back to the 5th century BC, and peaked in the second half of the 1st century AD, at the time of the Roman Empire, following the construction of salting facilities. Thanks to the local geographical context, these ancient facilities made it possible to develop activities related to the exploitation of the sea. They encouraged the growth of the salting industry, as well as the production and trade of garum.

In this case, the Neapolis experience project will contribute to raising awareness among visitors of the value of this heritage, by offering an immersive experience that allows them to project themselves into this historical era. Through the digital restitution of the salting factory, visitors will be able to explore the atmosphere of the place as it was before, by engaging in gamified discovery and learning activities.

Educational Objectives

This experience will have an educational purpose, allowing visitors to learn about the circumstances and method of production of garum, as well as the artifacts used in the manufacturing process. It will also allow them to understand the way of thinking of the economic actors of this period, and the importance of this know-how in the economy of ancient Africa.

Technologies Used

The project focuses on raising awareness, transmitting, and disseminating tangible and intangible heritage through an innovative approach that relies on new technologies:

  • Augmented Reality (AR)
  • Virtual Reality (VR)
  • Mobile application
  • Internet of Things (IoT)

These technologies will make it possible to offer a fun and cognitive experience, in addition to the production of an educational wooden model.
